Laird grew up in family with a strong horsemanship and teaching background. His grandfather was a horse trainer as well as a Quarter Horse, Paint and Appaloosa judge. Both his parents had teaching degrees from OSU. His mother was a highly decorated horsewoman and competitor showing both english and western. She was also Coos County rodeo queen. His dad grew up in Prineville on a ranch and Laird learned how to rope and ride from him at an early age. His parents were instrumental in giving him a solid equine background to succeed.
Laird left home with the ability to ride, rope, train and even shoe his own horses. And came away with a strong desire for teaching and horsemanship. He went to college at Oregon State University and rode colts. It was there that he decided he wanted to be a horse trainer full time. He went to work for cutting horse trainer, Dick Sieverson. And worked as an assistant for Jim Spence who a nationally ranked cowhorse trainer. He then went on to teach at OSU for a couple years in their colt program and taught beginner and intermediate riding in both english and western. He learned to adapt his teaching style to a variety of disciplines and riding levels. He then branched out working at a feedlot in Madras, Oregon working on his own colt starting business. After working in Madras, he worked for horse trainer, Carol Ward in California. Laird then came back to Oregon to start McCabe Performance Horses sharing a barn with Jim Spence doing clinics, showing and starting colts.
Laird is most passionate about teaching folks and helping them get better with their horses.
He is a money earner in Reining, Cutting, Reined Cowhorse, Team Roping ASHA and WSSH. He’s also been a qualifier for world series team roping in Vegas two years in a row.
He was also the winner of the extreme mustang makeover in 2009 and performed at the NW Horse Expo.
Laird McCabe’s unique background with horses of all disciplines and his teaching background makes him an excellent clinician. With this new website, Total Equine Connection he hopes to connect with more riders through video and web blogs in order to help them with any problems they have with their horse or riding, and most importantly, to have fun with our equine companions!!!
